A Life, Painted and Read Again

This deck captures a moment in Paris in the early 1930s, between the two World Wars — a period of mass immigration and refugee movement across Europe. Immigrants arrived carrying their food, their language, their customs, and, among them, traditions of cartomancy. Practices like Tarot and Lenormand card reading moved through Europe this way, shifting as they traveled from parlor amusement into something people turned to for a genuine glimpse of an uncertain future.

In 1999, while searching for Tarot decks at the flea market in Saint-Ouen, I found this hand-painted deck instead. The seller told me it was once customary for a seer to hand-paint an entire Lenormand deck as a personal "life reading" for a single patron — a message on each card capturing a moment of their life. The result is a fixed portrait of one person's life, and at the same time, a tool meant to be picked up again and again to navigate whatever future arrives.

That dual purpose is what makes the deck so unusual. Each hand-painted card carries a quatrain — four lines originally written for the patron who commissioned it. The first two lines speak to that original moment, fixed in 1930s Paris. The second two speak forward, as instructions for how this same card should be read later — including now, whenever it turns up in your own draw.
