The Hermit's austerity turns toward the heart here — a silent accounting of what's actually been accomplished emotionally, and what still needs cutting away. Jung insisted individuation required this kind of unflinching self-audit: it isn't enough to know what you want, you have to be willing to walk away from what merely almost qualifies.
