What This Card Means
A sober assessment of your emotional life, or a fit of emotional outburst. Discard what doesn't serve and hold onto what nourishes — separating the wheat from the chaff. As with the Hierophant, some sacrifice is required to transition to the next moment.
The Archetype
The first dark clouds in this suit arrive as a single crystal glass, already falling, already past the point of catching. Jung's Shadow work asks for exactly this kind of sober sorting — not every loss is a wound to nurse, some of it is simply what needed to break so you could see what was worth holding onto. William Morris discarded plenty of his own early work the same unsentimental way, convinced that holding onto what no longer served only got in the way of what would.
